The Siegel-Williams project on Cherry Ridge started out with a 1970’s ranch style house in an orchard, overlooking the Laguna de Santa Rosa basin and the mountains beyond. Inspired by the natural beauty and sweeping vistas of the site, a new two-story main house was added to the original structure, which underwent a complete remodel. Conceived by owners Glenn Siegel and Madrone Williams in the California Arts & Crafts style, the result was a new home with more than double the original living area.

The garage of the original house was enlarged and its entrance redirected. The rest of the original structure was converted into three bedrooms, a music room, and a laundry. In the new addition, the ground floor rooms, from entry, living room and formal dining room to kitchen and family room, accommodate both dwelling and entertaining in comfort and elegance. Upstairs, an office and master suite, including an unfinished sitting room, enjoy commanding views. The façade of the new and old sections of the finished house has been unified through an integrated roof treatment and new stucco and shingle siding all around. The two stone columns outside the kitchen were built to anchor a future deck and trellis. A permanent railing has yet to be designed for the porch outside the dining room.

Rich warm woodwork, enhanced by clean Craftsman-style detailing and highly skilled joinery, is featured throughout the home. The hardwood flooring is quarter-sawn white oak, with a Brazilian cherry feature strip. Honduran and African mahogany are the deep-toned woods of the first floor and stair system. Cherry trim is used in the master bedroom and office. The kitchen, master bath, and entertainment cabinets (all of cherry) and the hanging desk in the Music room were fabricated by Rillcraft Fine Woodworks. The music room trim is vintage redwood reclaimed from wine tanks. The oak mantle and fireplace surround also came from old wine vats.

Not only did the Siegel-Williams project draw on Artisan’s aesthetic sensibilities and commitment to fine craftsmanship, but it also called for a dynamic collaboration between owner and builder. Madrone played an integral role in design, management, product research, and purchasing, including selection and design of the tile used throughout the house. She worked with Marko on trim patterns and other design details, and helped with sanding, staining wood and other work. It was a pleasure to work on such a collaborative creative project. Artisan Builders is grateful for being given the opportunity to bring Glenn and Madrone’s vision to fruition.
